Seventeen years ago Cindy was asked to open a school, an English medium school in a church. This church is located in a poorer area of the city and good educational facilities were few and far between. Cindy is a very gifted teacher trainer and she saw this request as an opportunity to model what teaching is all about; empowering the students to learn, to build in them a thirst for lifelong learning.
And so GEMS was born. Golgotha English Medium School provides quality education to all in their community. It models education that is much more than rote learning. Students learn to think and discover and create. Cindy has trained the teachers to facilitate this.
And on Friday 10th January she stepped down as principal and handed over these responsibilities to the vice principal Probhu Jesu Das. Representatives from the 3 organisations - NZBMS, Bangladesh Baptist Church Fellowship and Golgotha Baptist Church- involved in running the school spoke of Cindy’s incredible vision and passion for this school and a different way of educating children. She has been ably supported by Ross who took care of many of the practical needs of the school. The tributes highlighted her commitment to this task.
The new principal has been at the school since it’s inception and has embraced its values and worked towards its goals. Jesu Das is married with four children and at this event he very movingly paid tribute to his wife and the support she gives him.
The school is in good hands and continues to need our prayers as they promote creative ways of learning in this community.
